October is School Safety Month! To kick it off, we have a special message from our School Resource Officer, Deputy Stocker.
My first year as your SRO there were 25 total incidents of students vaping. My second year, last year, the number was at 44. School staff spent approximately 69 hrs. investigating and dealing with vaping incidents. Those hours can be better spent providing security and education.
We are dedicated to helping our students with this increasing concern. In the past two years every time a student has been caught with a vape, I have asked them the same questions in the hopes we can identify the cause, then we can develop a solution. I ask, “Are you addicted, is it peer pressure, or do you want to be the cool kid?” Every time it was a resounding “NO” to each of my questions.
Over the summer I attended the School Resource Officers Conference, and one of the guest speakers addressed the reasons for children vaping. He suggested that for many of our youth vaping is a coping mechanism. He said that they are using it as a stress reliever for underling issues in their lives, whether it’s the everyday stressors like their next exam, emotional challenges, or possibly deeper mental health issues. He also acknowledged that accessibility and marketing tactics are contributors.
Parents need to foster an open dialog about vaping with their kids. They need to discuss the risks of vaping from a health standpoint, and the negative impact it can have on them in the form of discipline and legal ramifications if they vape in school. It helps to set a good example by not vaping yourself, and limit access by not having it in the home. Parents also need to address the reasons behind why their child may be vaping, while encouraging kids to share their thoughts and concerns.
If your child makes you aware of any of the listed causes of vaping, please contact us so we can help you steer them toward any available resources. There are programs that provide support for adolescents facing mental health challenges that can be effective in reducing vaping rates. By addressing the root causes of vaping, such as anxiety, emotional issues and peer pressure, these programs can equip young people with healthier coping mechanisms and resilience against substance use.

From the meteorological department!
After school yesterday into the early evening, the school weather station received about 2" of rain.
Total rainfall for the day was approximately 2.35".
The grass should take off now around the athletic complexes that were recently seeded. Hopefully there was not too much runoff in those areas.
For a detailed look around the area for precipitation amounts go to this website - as we move through the early morning hours more reports will be submitted to this page.
https://maps.cocorahs.org/?maptype=precip&datetype=daily&date=9%2F25%2F2024¢er=41.245633,-82.4535998
We are always interested in weather related photos, especially from the event like we had last night, specifically in regard to tornadic activity to the southwest of the school. Please share your photos in the comments section over on our Facebook page.
SIDENOTE - the maximum wind speed here at the school, according to our weather station, was only 25 mph. Surprising, considering the events that happened near the school campus.
