"The Western Reserve Endowment grant helped to
fund the Opera Cleveland Mini-Residency for the fifth grade students in
March, 2007. The students performed a mini-version of the well known
opera "Carmen" with artists from Opera Cleveland filling the lead roles
of Carmen, Don Jose and Escamillo. They rehearsed the songs in their
weekly Music classes then spent one morning with an Opera Cleveland
Artist staging the opera. On the day of the performance, the students
rehearsed with all three Opera Cleveland Artists and performed "Carmen"
for the student body in the afternoon. Later that evening they performed
for family, friends and community. Performing with professional opera
singers was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students. The
study of Opera is one benchmark in Ohio's Fine Arts Content Standards
for Fifth Grade Music and what better way to experience opera than to
perform with true professionals! Our students were praised on their
musicality, behavior and maturity by the Opera Cleveland Artists."
